Selection Process 2026
How We Select Lawyers
At Lawyers & Barristers Awards Australia, our selection process is grounded in independent research and a commitment to recognising excellence in legal practice. Lawyers featured in our awards are individually invited following a thorough evaluation process.
Each lawyer is assessed on merit, based on the following key criteria:
1. Invitation by Lawyers & Barristers Awards
Lawyers are individually invited to be recognised by Lawyers & Barristers Awards following a detailed and impartial research process. We only extend invitations to practitioners who meet our high standards and demonstrate excellence in their area of practice.
2. Courtroom Presence and Advocacy
We review each lawyer’s courtroom performance, advocacy skills, and professional conduct. This involves examining public court records, reported decisions, and available transcripts to assess their performance under pressure and their contributions to real legal outcomes.
3. Reputation Within the Legal Profession
A lawyer’s reputation among peers is a strong indicator of their ethical standards and competence. We consider:
- Input from fellow lawyers and barristers,
- Views of judicial officers (where available), and
- Notable case involvement or legal achievements.
4. Peer Reviews and Referrals
We actively seek confidential peer reviews from trusted legal professionals. These reviews assess a lawyer’s:
- Legal knowledge,
- Professional integrity,
- Client service, and
- Standing in the profession.
5. Client and Public Feedback
Client reviews are also considered, particularly those highlighting professionalism, reliability, communication, and outcomes. While secondary to legal expertise, client satisfaction contributes to a well-rounded evaluation.
6. Experience and Contribution
We take into account the lawyer’s years of practice, area of specialty, leadership in the legal community, and their broader impact on the profession.
Our goal is to ensure that only lawyers who demonstrate exceptional standards of skill, integrity, and commitment to justice are recognised.
